After just six years, ESADEBAN has become a European benchmark in the world of capital investment in business ventures. The network has become one of the best examples of ESADE’s dedication to supporting entrepreneurship.

ESADE BAN was born in ESADE Alumni – with all the support that being the investor network of our alumni association entails – with the involvement of the former Center for Entrepreneurship, now known as the ESADE Entrepreneurship Institute. Over the past few years, ESADE’s private investor network has grown exponentially. ESADE BAN has shown how initiatives can succeed by nurturing collaboration between our school and its alumni association. One example of this is the agility and efficiency with which ESADE BAN fulfils its mission of bringing together business angels and entrepreneurs.

A made-in-ESADE visionary

Alfonso Zamarro2 300x170 A made in ESADE visionaryI first learned of Alfonso Zamarro (BBA 2014), an exemplary innovator whose idea has been recognized in both investment circles and the media, through the EGarage on our Sant Cugat campus.

In less than half a year, Alfonso’s start-up, DEA Drones, has gone from promising project to winner of the Adecco Prize for ‘Brilliant Ideas’ and finalist for the Smart City Award, garnering features on the front pages of the leading Spanish newspapers. These accomplishments have no doubt also awakened investors’ interest in the company.

The story reminds me of the twists, turns and dogged ascents that mark the histories of ground-breaking business ideas. Alfonso’s case is that of an entrepreneur, who, from ESADE’s classrooms, dared to dream and to build the stepping stones he needed to make those dreams come true. Read the rest of this entry »

Ruralmind, showcasing our students’ entrepreneurial skills

ruralmind1 300x225 Ruralmind, showcasing our students’ entrepreneurial skills Once again, ESADE students’ entrepreneurial dexterity and drive are on display. This time, the ESADE BBA alumni Carles Royo and Clara Sellarès have given concrete form to their final-year project. Conceived in ESADE classrooms, Ruralmind is a rural tourism and adventure activities website that is swiftly emerging as a mountain tourism industry leader.

Aprende y Emprende: supporting entrepreneurship without limits

aprende emprende1 Aprende y Emprende: supporting entrepreneurship without limitsEntrepreneurship knows no limits and no borders. Conceiving ideas and creating industry-changing, custom-shaping businesses is within anyone’s reach. At ESADE, we are dedicated to promoting this vision of the world. Our students learn to assume risks in order to develop new initiatives and meet existing needs.

I am therefore very proud that the ESADE Entrepreneurship Institute (EEI) recently teamed up with the Prevent Foundation, to create an academic project called Aula de Emprendedores: Aprende y Emprende. This unique programme provides rigorous training and mentoring to entrepreneurs with disabilities who want to create a company or accelerate a recently created business initiative.

Cultivating entrepreneurship from the classrooms

Egarage1 Cultivating entrepreneurship from the classroomsAt ESADE, professors who lecture on entrepreneurship are constantly encouraging their students to start their own innovative businesses. In my case, I would draw on the testimonials of various entrepreneurs to give students as wide a range of tools as possible to manage the risks involved in any business venture. Years later, our alumni, now visionary businessmen and women in their own right, express their gratitude to ESADE – in writing and in person- for having planted the seeds of their passion for entrepreneurship. For a teacher, there is no greater reward than this type of recognition. Read the rest of this entry »

New entrepreneurs who could drive social change

momentum eugenia New entrepreneurs who could drive social change

Each social entrepreneur is different, but they all share one thing in common: the desire to drive social change.

The entrepreneurs accompanying us in the photo have launched ten of the most promising social start-ups in Spain. We met with them recently as part of the Momentum Project’s Social Investment Day, an event organised by BBVA, ESADE and PwC to help these entrepreneurs find potential investors. ESADE MBA students commit to tackling food insecurity in India

hult prize4 ESADE MBA students commit to tackling food insecurity in IndiaThere’s one thing that makes my job really worthwhile: when I see ESADE students helping to change the world for the better.

Social entrepreneurs are a special breed. The MBA students pictured above (Cesar del Valle, Greg Perowne, Monica Noda, John Myer and James Doherty) are a good example of this. They are driven by an altruistic vision to tackle social problems. Read the rest of this entry »

Why big companies need entrepreneurs

innovafinal Why big companies need entrepreneurs

We know it. Everyone says it. Risk is absolutely necessary for entrepreneurial success.

Entrepreneurs aren’t the only ones who have to deal with the fear of trying new things. This feeling also arises in many large companies when someone comes up with a new idea.

Innovation raises instinctive fears, especially when it comes from the outside, because companies are afraid that their business ideas will leak out to their competitors. Read the rest of this entry »

Why the world needs more green entrepreneurs

If we don’t try to make the world more sustainable, the damaging consequences of destroying the Earth’s natural resources may, one day, reach the point of no return.

A group of experts from the American Meteorological Society recently claimed that global warming has, in fact, become irreversible.

I’m sure this reflection has detractors and promoters, but independently of our personal beliefs, something that is pretty much undeniable is that we need to take better care of our planet. Read the rest of this entry »

Cradle of entrepreneurs

egarage1 300x186 Cradle of entrepreneursGreat businesses like Apple, Hewlett-Packard and Google started out from a humble garage. We wanted to create something at ESADE that would resemble this space to encourage our students to become entrepreneurs; and so we founded EGarage a year ago.

This month, we’re celebrating its 1st anniversary with good news. The space is bursting with activity – we’ve organised over 250 sessions, workshops and classes throughout the year, which have been attended by more than 6,600 participants. We also invited many of our alumni who have become successful entrepreneurs, because we wanted them to show our students that everything is possible when you believe in yourself. Alumni entrepreneurs are a real source of inspiration for students who want to make entrepreneurship their career path. Read the rest of this entry »
